In embarking in the long term and life changing travel that makes up your life abroad you're leaving your comfort zone and entering the unknown. Every country and culture has its own norms and coming from somewhere with its own version of normal behavior navigating a new version of normal behavior can be hard and full of social missteps. The Thai in particular have a particular set of norms in how social, business, and volunteer relationships work that are different than those back in the States. To help you navigate the new norms here are some of our indelible do’s and don’ts for being social in Thailand:

Do’s:

            Do remove your shoes before entering a temple, someone’s home and some shops (when you notice others doing so, or when there are shoes lined up outside the shop);

            Do dress conservatively in temples (i.e. at least have your knees and shoulders covered);

            Do bring a gift of wine, a fruit basket or traditional cakes when invited to a Thai’s house for a meal;

            Do smile a lot; in Thailand smiling at everyone is common;

Don’ts:

            Don’t talk in a loud tone or lose your temper in public, it’s considered very rude;

            Don’t be overly romantic/express PDA’s in public (holding hands is becoming more acceptable but making out in public is a definite no, no);

            Don’t be surprised or offended if questions of your age, marital status or salary are asked by someone who you’re getting to know, these questions are normal in Thai conversations;

            Don’t be late for meetings/appointments, punctuality is important.
